Mitchell, 22, will be unable to ride from next Friday (October 7) until April 6, 2012 after a urine sample he provided at Newmarket on May 28 contained benzoylecgonine, a diagnostic metabolite of the banned substance cocaine.
The disciplinary panel accepted an admission from the rider than he had broken rule (D) 65 of the rules of racing.
Mitchell, the son of former Epsom trainer Philip, called his behaviour "unacceptable as well as foolish" in a statement released on Wednesday.
He had ridden 28 winners from 251 rides this season and is not booked to ride any horses in the coming days according to the BHA's administrative website.
